FLINDERS EXPEDITION- Dec 2009Searching for shipwrecks deep in the Pacific Ocean, took Travmatt to Wreck Reefs on an Australian National Maritime Museum expedition. An 18-day documentary assignment, Producer/Cameraman Matthew GORMLY joined an esteemed team of 36 marine archaeologists & crew searching for the Mathew Flinders' wreck site 450 km ENE of Gladstone, Queensland. The expedition searched Wreck Reefs for a number of shipwrecks Ð particularly the "Cato", which floundered alongside the "HMS Porpoise" in August 1803. Esteemed explorer Mathew Flinders' was on board the Porpoise, en-route to England to report his Australian finds to the Admiralty. Only a handful of seaman where lost, before Flinders' took charge of the 90 survivors on the tiny sandy cay and sailed to Sydney in a longboat to raise the alarm. The search utilized swim lines, scuba and magnetometry, whilst a detailed archaeological examination of Porpoise Cay uncovered remarkable artefacts. It's a fascinating story, brought to light by the expertise of the marine archaeologists, and passion of the SilentWorld Foundation's Director John MULLEN. Matthew GORMLY joined the expedition as a Producer/Cameraman, equipped solely with a Sony EX3, Lectrosonic UHF mics, and MacBook Pro ingesting for Avid. On board were the underwater photography/cinematography services of Xanthe RIVETT. In an extremely perilous environment, two days steaming from port, it was the ultimate test for the equipment and workflow. ![]() ![]() |
