YOUTH OLYMPICS

- Jul 2010

The lighting of the Youth Olympic flame in Ancient Olympia, followed by a whistle-stop global tour occupied Travelling Matt during July/August.

The "Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame" was the precursor to the inaugural Singapore2010 Youth Olympic Games. Cameraman Matthew GORMLY shot the official Olympic coverage of the lighting of the flame, then accompanied the flame to Berlin (Europe), Dakar (Africa), Mexico City (the Americas), Auckland (Oceania), and Seoul (Asia) for city celebrations on each of the five continents. The flame then arrived in Singapore, for on a six-day torch relay ahead of the opening ceremony.

During the travels, Cameraman Matt GORMLY & Editor Pawel JARECKI flew with the flame aboard a Gulfstream G5 executive jet. As first on the ground, they provided ENG news-feeds & highlight packages, distributed globally via satellite & FTP.

With a quick turn-around required, Matt opted for Sony EX XDcam, shooting on the new Sony PMW350 (EX350) camera. The camera proved perfect for the job, dealing with extreme heat, humidity & condensation, torrential rain, with outstanding low-light capabilities. Advance crews met the jet at each location, pre-shooting content on the Sony EX1 to maintain a low profile. Packages were cut on-site, using Final Cut Pro, and uploaded within 4-hours of the celebration.
